Who is Zak?
Zak is a young FTM transsexual living outside of New York City. He is interested in the medical field and is currently enrolled as a full time student in nursing school. When asked what he enjoys he says, "I spend a lot of time doing homework…" Zak expects to have more time for fun and friends once he completes his education.
What is a FTM Transexual?
A transsexual is someone who feels as though his or her physical body and biological sex do not match their gender identity. An FTM transsexual is someone who was born with female anatomy, but identifies as male. FTM transsexuals may sometimes undergo hormone therapy and surgical procedures including top surgery (also known as mastectomy) to present as male.
To put it more simply- while Zak was born into a female body, his gender is male.
Why does Zak need our help?
In order for Zak to progress with his physical transition, he plans on undergoing top surgery. Behaviors that many young men take for granted such as being shirtless on the beach or in the locker room can be inhibiting for a pre-op FTM. As top surgery is considered an "elective cosmetic procedure," many insurance companies will not cover the cost of chest reconstructive surgery. This procedure can cost several thousand dollars. For a young student, this expense can be quite a burden, however Zak is determined to undergo the procedure as soon as possible, so he can continue to happily live his life as a young male.
